There are four main types of garage door openers, each one has different pros and cons:
Screw Drive:
The Screw Drive garage door opener rotates a threaded steel rod to move the trolley; allowing it to open and close the garage door. This opener is ideal for wood garage doors or garages with low ceilings. This opener uses low temp grease for the maintence of the screw rod inside.
Chain Drive:
The Chain Drive garage door opener uses a chain to pull and push the trolley; allowing it to open and close the garage door. This opener is louder than other openers. The chain drive openers are often installed on rental properties or garage doors that are not used as much. This opener is more cost friendly than other opener options. This open uses a silicon base lubercation for the chain maintence.
Belt Drive:
The Belt Drive garage door opener uses a belt to pull and push a trolley; allowing it to open and close the garage door. This opener is the quiestest and requires less maintence than the other. The belt on the opener has an auto-tension spring to help keep the proper tension.
JackShaft:
The JackShaft garage door opener connects to the garage door tube system, on the side of the garage door, instead of down the middle hanging from the ceiling. The tube system is at the top of your garage door that has your garage door springs on it. This opener is used when a standard opener will not fit due to lack of room, wood or metal beams in the garage that would interfer with a standard opener being installed or the garage door is a high lift setup. This is one of the most expensive openers.
Additions and Accessories:
Wireless Keypad - Mounts outside the garage door. Allows you to push in a pin number to open your garage door.
2 or 3 button Remote - Allows you to use one remote to open two garage door openers of the same brand.

Multi-function wall console - Simple multi-function wall console normally have 3 buttons on it. One to open and close your garage door, Turn on and off your garage opener lights, and Vacation lock. Some high end one's can have a display screen which can display time, date, temperature etc, Depending on the brand of opener.
